How To Really Control Type 2 Diabetes

A big problem in the world today is the unhealthy relationship most people have with food. In turn, it is food that greatly affects how long you live and the likelihood of diseases like type 2 diabetes catching up with you. But it doesn't have to be this way.

If you want to avoid type 2 diabetes or if you already have it and want to control or reverse it you must understand and really get a few important things. But first things first, I really want to drive the point home that like so many other diseases type 2 diabetes comes down to what you put in your mouth. If you eat the wrong kinds of foods you'll wind up paying the price.

So what exactly can you do to not develop diabetes or prevent diabetes from slowing you down?

Well I'd first like to make few distinctions between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas produces little to no insulin. There's a specific test that a doctor can order which measures amount of insulin that your pancreas is producing. This test is called a c-peptide test. Not all doctors know about this test as I have advised numerous family practitioners to order this test and why it is important.

The normal range for C-peptide levels is from 0.5-2.0 ng/ml. Levels less than the 0.5 ng/ml mark would mean that a person who is diabetic is producing little to no insulin.

Based on these test result a doctor would start diabetes treatment by choosing one of two types of drugs: insulin secretogogues (make the pancreas produce more insulin) or insulin injections. Or a doctor may choose to prescribe insulin sensitizers. This is for people who are insulin resistant and may have normal or slightly above normal c-peptide levels.

A Type 1 Diabetic would not be producing enough insulin on their own and would have low c-peptide levels. And while diet can play a big role in managing blood sugar, without insulin being produced inside the body it would be necessary to get it from elsewhere. That's where daily insulin shots or an insulin pump would come into play.

But with Type 2 diabetes it is usually a different story. With type 2 a person's cells are resistant to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for reducing your blood sugar and 90-95% of the population in the US with diabetes is type 2.

So this generally means that a person's cells don't properly respond to insulin and insulin can't do it's job. But the good news is with proper diet and exercise we can drastically improve this.

So the real 1000 pound elephant in the room is insulin resistance.

This is usually the first problem in type 2 and cause high blood sugar and all the other things to start to happen. So it is critical that we reduce insulin resistance and, which isn't impossible to do. Two of the quickest ways to do this is first by losing weight if you can lose a few pounds and second, increase your physical activity.

In my 8-plus years in the industry, I've learned type 2 diabetes isn't really as bad as you may have been told and is totally controllable if you do the right things.
